SYNOPSIS
This episode explores the legend of the Bermuda Triangle – the mysterious region off the East Coast of the United States that has captured the public imagination with tales of vanishing ships and aircraft.
The Triangle goes by many names – The Vile Vortices or The Devil’s Triangle. There are also debates as to its boundaries. But at the center of the myths and legends are the 450,000 square miles of island strewn ocean between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.
People have been reporting strange happenings in the Bermuda Triangle since the days of sail but the story hit the headlines with the tragic loss of Flight 19. In the closing days of 1945, this training flight of five Avenger bombers, with 14 naval aviators aboard, left the runway at Fort Lauderdale airport and never returned.
We investigate Flight 19, the greatest story of the Bermuda Triangle legend, by re-flying the exact route in a vintage Avenger bomber. Will we face the same instrument trouble and confusion that struck Flight 19?
Since Flight 19 countless accounts have been heard of disappearances, unidentified flying objects and strange conditions within the Triangle. We will hear from witnesses who have seen UFOs and experienced ‘time warps’ while travelling in the area.
We also go in search for the cause for the Triangle legend. We meet the Coastguard, who fly through the region everyday, believe there’s nothing there but stories and rumours. Weathermen suggest that the storms, hurricanes and waterspouts that terrorise the area could claim a huge number of the missing travellers.
But others point to more extreme theories such as strange, unseen energy sources as an explanation to the Triangle. They claim there are forces at work in the area that are on the edge of modern science. We travel far from the beautiful seas of the Triangle, to Vancouver, Canada, to meet John Hutchinson, the lone inventor who claims he has a key to the Triangle riddle.
We will meet witnesses, experts, veterans and scientists in a quest to unravel the secrets of the Bermuda Triangle.
